  • Six ounces is a proper tasting glass: the other flight set on this shelf gives 16 oz carafes, which is a drink and not a sample
  • Two boards rather than one, so eight people taste at once or two tables run side by side
  • The chalkboard labels come without chalk, stated plainly, on a $54.99 gift set

Best for: Eight tasting pours at once, labeled, if you remember to buy chalk

What the maker puts in writing

  • 2 wooden flight trays, each securely holding 4 glasses
  • Eight 6 oz mini decanter wine glasses
  • Built-in chalkboard labels (chalk sold separately)
  • Dishwasher-safe glassware; solid wooden trays should be hand washed

Six ounces against sixteen

The two flight sets on this shelf disagree about what a tasting glass is.

This one: eight glasses of six ounces. The other: four carafes of sixteen.

Six ounces is a tasting glass. Sixteen is a quarter of a bottle. For comparing four wines side by side, this is the set that is actually sized for the job.

And the parenthesis

(chalk sold separately)

Fifty-five dollars for two boards and eight glasses, with a chalkboard you cannot write on until you have been to a shop. It is honest, and it is annoying.

What readers ask us

Why is 6 oz the right size?

Because a flight pour is two or three ounces and a glass wants air above the wine. Six ounces gives you that. The Picnic Time set on this shelf uses 16 oz carafes, which hold most of a bottle each — a different purpose entirely.

Chalk sold separately — really?

Stated in the second bullet. It is a small thing and an avoidable one: the set is $54.99 and the chalkboard is one of its selling points. Buy a stick of chalk at the same time.

Two boards or one?

Two, each holding four glasses. The alternative on this shelf is one 21-inch board with four larger carafes. Two smaller boards travel between rooms and tables; one long board makes more of a centrepiece.
