  • The only listing on this shelf that publishes the method, the water temperature and the freezing time — 104 °F, 20+ hours
  • Explains why the ice comes out clear rather than only promising that it does: directional freezing drives bubbles down out of the sphere
  • Twenty hours and water you have to boil and cool first — this is the most work of any mold here

Best for: One clear 2.5-inch sphere in a tumbler, for someone willing to plan a day ahead

The only listing here that tells you how

Three products on this shelf promise clear ice. This is the one that publishes a water temperature, a freezing time and a mechanism.

The $35 mold two rows down promises crystal-clear mini sculptures and pure, translucent magic across five bullets, and no figure at all.

What it costs you

A day, and a kettle.

Boil the water, let it fall to about blood heat, fill, freeze overnight and most of the next day. Two spheres come out. The $7.29 tray on this shelf makes twelve cubes while you sleep, and they are cloudy.

Both are correct answers to different questions.

What readers ask us

Why boiled water?

Boiling drives dissolved air out of the water, and air is what makes ice cloudy. Cooling it to around 104 °F before filling avoids warping the silicone. FDDAI is the only maker on this shelf that explains this; the other two clear-ice claims here give you the result and no method.

What is directional freezing?

Insulating the mold so it freezes from the top down, which pushes bubbles and impurities ahead of the ice front and out of the sphere into the base. It is the only technique that produces genuinely clear ice at home, and it is why this mold has a foam body.

Twenty hours — really?

That is the maker’s figure, and it follows from the method: insulated freezing is deliberately slow. A plain silicone tray on this shelf freezes overnight and makes cloudy ice. This is the trade.
