The two numbers the cheaper one leaves out

Twenty-four hours. Five to ten minutes.

The Trademark Innovations mold at $17.99 makes the same decorated ice barrel in the same kind of stainless shell and tells you only to use warm water. Here you get the schedule, which matters when the bucket is meant to be on the table at eight.

And the distilled-water line

One sentence, and the most useful one in either flower-mold listing: minerals and dissolved air are what make a block of ice white. Distilled water is the cheap half of the answer.

The other half — freezing slowly and directionally — belongs to the sphere mold further up this shelf.

What readers ask us

Is acrylic worth $22 more?

Acrylic is harder and clearer than the plastic in the cheaper mold on this shelf, and it is the maker’s central quality claim. What you also get is the two timings. Whether that is twenty-two dollars is a fair question, and the stainless shell is the same on both.

Why distilled water?

Tap water carries dissolved minerals and air that cloud the ice. Distilled water gets you closer to clear. It is the same principle the FDDAI sphere mold on this shelf addresses with boiled water and directional freezing, stated here in one sentence.

Will it fit a magnum?

The listing does not say, and publishes no capacity or dimensions. It names champagne, wine, whisky and vodka bottles, which vary considerably in girth. Neither flower mold on this shelf gives a figure.
