  • A see-through window on the corkscrew, so the cork can be watched coming out rather than guessed at
  • The vacuum pump is manual here and electric in the $59.95 version — that, and a blue LED on the base, is the whole $10

Ten dollars, itemized

Ivation sells two sets on this shelf, $49.99 and $59.95, with five bullets each that read almost word for word the same.

Here is everything that differs:

  • the pump is manual here, electric there
  • the base is plain here, blue LED there

That is it. The opener, the 30-cork rating, the window, the aerator, the cutter and the stoppers are the same objects.

Which is the better buy

If you will pump by hand, this one — and it is also the only manual pump on the shelf, which means it will still work in ten years.

What readers ask us

What is the difference from the $59.95 Ivation?

Two things, read off the bullets side by side: this set has a *manual* wine pump and a plain charging base; the dearer one has an *electric* wine pump and a blue LED charging base. The corkscrew, the 30-cork figure, the aerator, the foil cutter and the date-stamped stoppers are identical.

Is a manual pump worse?

It is slower and needs a few strokes. It also cannot run out of charge, and the vacuum it reaches depends on your arm rather than a motor. Three items on this shelf include a pump; this is the only manual one.

What are date-stamped stoppers?

Stoppers with a dial or marking for the day the bottle was opened, so a half-finished bottle in the fridge is not a guess. Only Ivation includes them on this shelf.
