How do I clean a wooden wine rack without damaging the finish?

Wood needs a meaningfully different approach from the metal and glass cleaning guidance covered elsewhere on this site.

Avoid standing water or soaking entirely

Unlike metal or glass surfaces, wood can warp, swell, or have its finish damaged by standing water or excess moisture — a dry or only barely damp cloth for routine dusting is the safer default, never a fully wet cloth or soaking.

Use a wood-appropriate cleaner for anything beyond dusting

For marks or buildup that dusting alone doesn’t address, a cleaner specifically formulated for the rack’s wood finish type is the safer choice over general household cleaners, which can strip or dull certain wood finishes.

Check for any manufacturer-specific care guidance

Some wood-finished racks come with specific care instructions matched to their particular finish — checking for and following this specific guidance is more reliable than a generic wood-care approach.

What to do in practice

Dust routinely with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoid standing water entirely, and use a wood-appropriate cleaner (per any manufacturer guidance) for anything beyond routine dusting.

What we would not do

Use a wet cloth or general household cleaner on a wood-finished rack the way it might be used on metal or glass — wood needs its own, moisture-cautious approach.
