How do I clean a wine decanter without a decanter brush?

A decanter’s narrow neck and wide base are exactly what make it hard to clean by hand without a specialized tool, but there are reasonable alternatives.

The rice or ice method

Adding a small amount of uncooked rice or crushed ice along with a little water and gently swirling the decanter can help dislodge residue from the interior surface, using the abrasive texture in place of a brush.

Warm water and mild soap first

Starting with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap, swirled thoroughly, addresses much of the light residue before resorting to the rice or ice method for tougher spots.

A dedicated decanter brush remains the more direct tool

For frequent decanting, a proper decanter brush — with a long, flexible handle suited to the narrow neck — is generally a more effective and controllable option than the rice or ice method, worth considering for regular use.

What to do in practice

Try warm water and mild soap first, escalate to the rice or ice method for stubborn residue, and rinse thoroughly before the next use regardless of method.

What we would not do

Recommend abrasive cleaning tools not suited to glass, or skip a thorough final rinse after using the rice or ice method, since residual grains or ice fragments should be fully cleared.
