What the maker puts in writing

  • An open decanter carafe that lets wine breathe, for reds or whites
  • Contains no lead. Capacity: 750 ml — holds up to a full bottle of wine
  • Godinger has specialized in handcrafted giftware since 1973

That is the whole listing.

Holds up to a full bottle

Which is exactly the problem, stated by the maker in the only product bullet it wrote.

Seven hundred and fifty milliliters of vessel for 750 ml of wine means the wine reaches the rim. No air above it, nothing to swirl, no spare volume.

Five decanters on this shelf hold between 1,200 and 1,600 ml and three of them cost less.

What is genuinely here

Fifty years of glass-making and a 216 mm (8.50 in) body, which is a broad shallow shape — good for the two-thirds of a bottle you would sensibly put in it.

What readers ask us

Why is 750 ml a problem?

Because decanting works by exposing wine to air and by letting you swirl it. A vessel exactly the size of the bottle is full when the bottle is empty. The JoyJolt here is 1,200 ml for $5 less, and the Bella Vino 1,600 ml for $0.96 less.

Is it useless at 750 ml then?

No. Pour two glasses first and decant the rest and it behaves like any decanter, with room to move. It is also the right size for a half-bottle or for serving a white at table. It is simply not sized for the job the word decanter implies.

What about the 1973?

Godinger is a real and long-established giftware maker, and on a shelf containing a brand called bigjvbfv and a listing that claims 400 liters, that counts for something. It is still one of the three bullets this listing spends.
