The only real tasting glass on this shelf

Nine items here. Three are small wine glasses, three are gel-filled cooling tumblers, two are boards and one is a marble holder.

This is an INAO: a standardized shape, small bowl, tall narrowing chimney, designed so that two people in two rooms are smelling the same thing.

Five dollars a glass

Against $2.17 for the twelve-glass set further up this shelf.

What the money buys: lead-free crystal instead of glass, Europe instead of unstated, 6.25 inches instead of 5.6, and a shape with a name and a reason.

What it does not buy: a warranty. The cheap set has one.

What readers ask us

What is an INAO glass?

A standardized tasting glass: a small bowl with a tall narrowing chimney, defined so that tasters in different places are smelling the same wine the same way. Ravenscroft calls it the Port/International Taster and says it is a favorite in winery tasting rooms. It is the only standardized shape on this shelf.

Why does the chimney matter?

Because aroma collects in the space above the wine and a narrowing rim concentrates it under your nose. A 7.5 oz glass with a two-ounce pour has a lot of that space. A stemless 12 oz tumbler, also on this shelf, has none of it.

Twice the price of the BTGLLAS set — why?

Lead-free crystal rather than glass, European manufacture, the INAO shape and a taller 6.25-inch glass. Whether that is worth $34 more for twelve depends on whether you are tasting or serving.
