The same cup in two materials

Host sells an 8.5 oz gel-walled tumbler twice on this shelf: $19.99 in BPA-free plastic and $33.99 in real glass.

Same capacity. Same gel. Same two-hour freeze.

Fourteen dollars buys the feel of glass and loses you the outdoors.

The detail worth copying

Freeze it upside down.

Gel in a double wall will pool in the bottom if you stand the cup up in the freezer, and then it chills the base of your wine and not the rest. One sentence, in one of the three Host listings, that applies to all of them.

What readers ask us

Is it worth $14 over the plastic version?

You get real glass instead of BPA-free plastic at the same capacity and with the same gel. What you lose is outdoor use and the published serving temperatures, which only the plastic listing gives. If the cup never leaves the house, glass is the nicer object.

Why upside down?

So the gel inside the double wall spreads evenly around the bowl instead of pooling in the base. This is the only Host listing on the shelf that says so, and it applies to all three.

How long to chill?

Two hours in the freezer for a white; the fridge for a red, to hold it at cellar temperature rather than make it cold.
