This is a fairly specific but common annoyance, and warm water is usually the safest first approach before anything more aggressive.
Soak before scraping
Soaking the labeled area in warm, soapy water for a period softens the adhesive considerably — attempting to scrape or peel a dry label risks scratching the glass, so soaking first is the safer starting point.
Peel gently once the adhesive has softened
After soaking, a label often peels away much more easily, sometimes with just fingers or a soft plastic scraper rather than anything abrasive that could mark the glass.
A dedicated adhesive remover can help with stubborn residue
For sticky residue left behind after the label itself comes off, a small amount of dedicated adhesive remover, applied carefully and rinsed thoroughly afterward, can finish the job without resorting to abrasive scrubbing.
What to do in practice
Soak first, peel gently once softened, and use an adhesive remover only for stubborn residue afterward — rinsing thoroughly before the decanter’s next use.
What we would not do
Recommend scraping a dry, stuck-on label directly — soaking first considerably reduces the risk of scratching the glass.
