Do I need special glasses for cocktails, or will any glass do?

This comes down to whether functional differences between glass shapes matter enough for a given use case, since any glass will hold the drink either way.

Glass shape affects aroma and temperature retention

A narrower glass opening can concentrate aroma more than a wide one, and glass size and shape affect how quickly a drink warms as ice melts — these are functional, not purely aesthetic, differences between a dedicated cocktail glass and a general-purpose one.

Any glass works for basic function

For simply holding and drinking a cocktail, any appropriately sized glass does the job — the “need” for specific glassware is about optimizing the drinking experience, not a functional requirement in the way a coupler needs to match a keg valve.

Dedicated glassware matters more for some drink styles than others

Drinks served up (no ice) versus on the rocks, or drinks meant to be sipped slowly versus quickly, benefit differently from glass shape — the case for dedicated glassware is stronger for some styles than others.

What to do in practice

Use general glassware without concern for casual drinking, and consider dedicated cocktail glasses specifically for drink styles where aroma or temperature retention meaningfully matters to the experience.

What we would not do

Suggest dedicated cocktail glassware is purely about presentation with no functional basis — glass shape does have real, if modest, effects on aroma and temperature retention.
