This connects directly to our note on Barsys versus Bartesian’s underlying mechanisms, framed here as a straightforward choosing decision.
Capsules trade ingredient flexibility for consistency and simplicity
A capsule-based system pours a pre-portioned, pre-formulated pod with minimal setup and highly consistent results each time — the trade-off is being limited to whatever capsule recipes and brands are available, rather than using any spirit on hand.
Weight-based systems use your own bottles
A system that measures by weight as it pours from bottles you supply offers far more flexibility in what spirits and mixers are used, at the cost of needing to keep those bottles stocked and correctly placed rather than simply loading a capsule.
Ongoing cost structure differs between the two
Capsule systems carry an ongoing per-drink capsule cost; bottle-based systems shift that cost to buying spirits and mixers directly, which may work out cheaper or more expensive depending on how much is actually consumed.
What to choose
For simplicity and consistency with minimal setup, a capsule system is the more convenient choice. For flexibility in exactly what’s being mixed, a weight-based system using your own bottles is the better fit.
What we would not do
Suggest one system is universally better — they serve genuinely different priorities: convenience and consistency versus flexibility and ingredient control.
